Northern Beans and Ham:
Here is another nice autumn/winter meal.
From the store: Package of Northern Beans (may be called Navy), a slice of the cooked 1/4 inch ham steak (usually found in the meat section).
Soak 2 cups of the beans overnight. Drain, rinse and transfer to a pot. I usually have some chicken stock or beef stock in the freezer in canning jars.
Defrost and add a jar of chicken stock to the beans and then add just enough water until the beans are covered about a 1/4 inch. I like lots of pepper in this and just a bit of salt to taste. Bring to a boil and then simmer for a few hours. Toss in a bay leaf or two also. The last hour before serving dice up the ham into bite size pieces and add that.
The beans will form there own thickened sauce when they cool down.
I made a white bread in the bread maker to accompany this.
Serve in a bowl it is really more of a soup. Make the day before a game and serve as a snack.
