The goals of our league are to have a wide variety of game offerings, continued growth (number of active players and features/benefits to members), education and improvement in the game, and happy players. Sometimes we meet these goals; sometimes we fall short. But we are always reaching for the brass ring.
The Divisional play has the opportunity to introduce a new audience of players into our tourney system - and the Tourney play has the opportunity to introduce a new audience of players into our Divisional system. They work hand-in-hand.
We do not want a parallel purpose of "either" EDS "or" Tourneys. The utopia would enable us to have a good mixture of both. The advantage of regular tourneys is that players can come for a quick game (or several) in the middle of their busy day and hang out in the lobby for some fun. The advantage of Divisional play is that players who enjoy the large-point matches, yet might not have time to devote hours for a Tourney of that size, can schedule their matches at their convenience over a 13-day period. Such flexibility in their scheduling will allow them to do both, if they choose. We also have a large group of players who do not like the high-point matches and come for the tourneys, fun, or both.
The goal of 60 players was my challenge to the TDs. TDs are in front of the players every day and have the opportunity to show the players all of the opportunities the league has to offer. This number was not a mandate, but a way to get everyone involved in making the next period a success. This is true with all events, not just EDS. We need everyone's help to get players involved in regular tourneys AND the events, such as the Marathon, Olympics, Decathlon, BOS, and TOC.
It is true that the first few days of any EDS period are busy and tend to make it hard for us to fill some of the tourneys. Perhaps this is where we can use the opportunity for creativity with recruiting new players, trialing some new types of tourneys, or having theme events. I'm willing to consider all options here. If you have ideas of how we can work through the first few difficult days of a divisional period and still provide good tourneys to our players, I encourage you to discuss these with your group leader and me. I'm all for making this a better place for us all!
Things will settle into a routine, and players will be back as they have time. Let's be there waiting for them.
:) Thanks for all you do,
