At the current time there is no league in Eliters that have a 5 minute timer rule. This timer rule applies to all Eliter Leagues.
This issue has been discussed many times over the years and the same result has come that we do need the 10 minute rule, especially in 2x2 leagues.
Please remember, the 10 minutes is for a Team which means that throughout an entire tourney, a team only has up to ten minutes(per team) to get to tables to play no matter if its one, two, or three rounds. Having a 5 minute timer would increase the DQ's of players in the later rounds of tourneys. So for example: Player A is missing at start for 4 minutes and 10 seconds, then if Player A or B is on the timer in the second or third round, and exceeds the 50 seconds left, then that player is automatically timed out and the team gets the sub.
I looked at the last 40 tourneys I have hosted and of the 16 timers I placed on players, 9 additional people would have been DQ'd in the second or third round because there team had used the 5 minutes up. And of those 9, 5 of them would have been the second member of the team who may have been missing for less than 2 minutes. By doing this we would be punishing some of the timely members who for reasons out of there control froze up, had to reboot, etc...
For the players that are habitually late for a tourney the TDs are trained to Note them for late arrival. If the player has a documented pattern of tardiness, then they can be dealt with by Gumshoe Steve.
TD's all want to keep there tourneys running as much as players do. It is key that the TD Notes those players whom they know are habitual late arrivals. If you notice a specific member who you feel is habitually tardy, then write the HA of that league. The HA then can make sure all TDs in his/her league are identifying and noting as needed those who may be habitually tardy.
I hope this helps
