In red/black tourneys, the upcard (first card showing at the beginning of a hand) determines that hand of cards. If red, no knocking; if black, knock or gin.

If you use up all the cards and get to the end of that hand and no one wins, a new hand is dealt, with a new upcard. So the red or black status may change for the new hand.

A new hand begins when cards are re-dealt.
