Hearty Game Basics mikey444u     5/18/2005 18:03

Hearts is rather a cutthroat game, lol, and tactics can vary depending on your, and others score. Basically you play to finish with the lowest amount of points. Points are taken in the following way...

1 point for each heart taken in a trick.

13 points if you take the Queen of spades.

If the option JD ON is being played, (Jack of Diamonds ON), then taking this reduces your score by 10 points.

Finally Shooting the Moon, taking every heart and the Queen of Spades, and the Jack of Diamonds if that option is on, allows you to either add 26 points to everyone else's score, or to reduce yours by 26 points.

The game play itself is straightforward.... Ace beats King etc....and players must play a card of the suit that's led if they have one. Otherwise they may play any card they wish. At the start of most hands, all players must pass 3 cards to the others...1st hand players pass 3 cards left, 2nd hand pass 3 right, then across then a NO Pass hand, and so it continues...

Passing is very tactical, but a basic rule of thumb is to always try and pass a low heart, (this makes it very difficult for that person to then Shoot the Moon). It is also advisable to keep low Spades, thus ensuring as best you can your not stuck with the Queen of Spades. Also if you can void yourself in any suit, then this will allow you to have more control over what you are discarding.

With Jack Diamonds On games, (JD ON), unless you hold the Jack, then its best to avoid leading Diamonds, as player to your right, (last to play), may hold the Jack.

Really, that's about it, obviously its best to rid yourself of the higher cards, Aces, Kings, Queens etc... at the start of the game while other players will likely still hold that suit.

Feel free to contact the hosting TD for any advice on individual game formats. Our Hearty Help Topics are 3141, 3142, 3143 and 3144.
