Re: ELIC has to be reformed. bear_music      7/2/2002 15:31

We appreciate the input and your constructive suggestion. We wish it were as simple as that. We are well aware that this first iteration of the ELIC has not been without problems. Let me try to describe our thinking:

First, we have rules in place for multi-day tourneys that have survived the test of time. As long as the inviting player cc's the TD, s/he is protected against such "fraud". After all, the other player has an equal responsibility to contact his/her opponent, merely "not having received an email" is insufficient justification for not playing.

Second, it is very difficult to run an event of this magnitude on fixed tourney schedules: so many who wish to enter have widely divergent schedules. If we did what you suggested (and we DO appreciate the input) we'd have even MORE people complaining they wanted to play but we made it impossible for them.

Third, consider how we might deal with a TD having to run 13-16 SIMULTANEOUS tourneys in the case of the USA elimination? Could we divide USA up into time zones, and seed players into a time zone slot that (theoretically) leaves them free to play? What about the players who work night shift in a given zone, who'd be happier being moved east? And so on and so forth... Im sure youd agree that the complexity of it boggles the mind.

Fourth, if we did decide to try this, wed then be obligating the TD to attend each and every one of these tourneys from start to finish, and that would be a significant burden. Alternatively, we might assign a large TEAM of TDs to run the event, but then someone would have to have administrative oversight, which means being present at each and every tourney, so this would not solve the problem.

Finally, if you look at the Olympics, your suggested exemplar for how the ELIC might be done, you'll see that rarely do more than 32 people participate in a given tourney, and only a dozen or so actually participate in a majority of the Olympics events. We know for a fact that this is because it's difficult for people to block out schedules that allow such intensive participation. In fact, we are seeking alternatives on how to structure the Olympics, but nothing completely satisfactory has evolved.

We believe the fairest approach is for people to read the rules, make frequent and sincere attempts to contact their opponents, and document each step they take in case of a dispute. For all its flaws, the greatest of which you have succinctly pointed out, the multi-day format is the best we have come up with, thus far, to allow large numbers of people in different geographic locations to participate in very large tourneys.

That said, we will certainly be seeking ways to improve this competition. This was the first time we have held it, and there are certainly bugs to be ironed out. All constructive input is welcome.

Again, thanks for your feedback.
