The following e-mail was received from lowellgeorge2000. As can be seen by the subject line, he “dared” us to post his message. We are not in the habit of accepting dares, of course, but we nevertheless thought it appropriate to post his message because it’s an issue we see raised over and over again, and we think it’s worth responding to. Then a post in the Hearts club, #15951 by birdmik, raised similar issues. It, too, is repeated below, and our response is addressed to both.

Subject: I dare you to post this
I cant believe that you people feel it is your duty to be thought police and be so fascist about rules and comments the players make. All the entire leauge has told you the same things, and you act as if this is something new. NoeW (TD Name deleted) gets suspended (probably the best TD you ever had for giving people fair shakes, the others insult each other all the time) an you keep promoting this ridiculous TD thing like its scientology or something. Get a Clue. Relax, have fun. Play the game. Stop organizing. What the hell is wrong with you ?
#1) People are sometimes RUDE.
# 2) People play games at differnt skill levels and at different paces.
Post #15951, birdmik:
I agree with tracylynnh that the members of elite should be heard. There gripes and compliments should be heard. Its our american right. If elite can delete what people say they are taking one of constitutional rights. We as many of elite are entitled to our opinion and that our opinion should be able to be heard by anyone that wants to hear it. I feel if our messges are deleted that big brother is watching over us and allowing us to see only what they want to see. As long as the message has no vulgar words it shoild be allowed to be seen by anyone. One final thought the members of elite are we robots or humans. Lets stand up for our rights and make them not delete messages. Members of elite lets be heard before they make more rule that screw us and lets stop suspending people and have fun.
It is a basic tenet of economic theory that “bad money drives out good”. A similar dictum applies in the social sciences. We have been running leagues out of Yahoo rooms for a long time now, our collective history goes back years before Elite was formed, and we have formed certain opinions of how to do it. Our theories have been validated by our experiences with Elite.
Before discussing WHY we run things the way we do, we’d like to make clear one thing: EliteLeague is NOT America, it is NOT a democracy, it is a privately held enterprise that has the right to regulate its operations as it sees fit. As an example, consider this: if you owned a fine restaurant, where people went to enjoy exquisite meals in soothing surroundings, you would not tolerate a customer who came in regularly and made it his habit to loudly and publicly criticize your staff for every imaginable (or imaginary) failing. This customer would be told he was not welcome in your establishment. And he is in no way protected by the American right to “free speech” in this case.
