Re: Freedom of Speech? (part 2) bear_music      8/31/2002 22:58

(continued from previous post)

When people talk about free speech, in America, they are referring to the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which in its entirety reads as follows: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

The key word here is “government”: our right to free speech is a right not to be censored by our government, and it is fundamental to our freedom as citizens. However, this “right” is not translatable into the private sphere. For example, I have every right in the world to forcibly remove from my home or my place of business any individual whose behavior offends me.
Now, we who administrate Elite spent a lot of time studying what was wrong with Yahoo lobbies and other leagues collectively. Any of you can observe the “bad money drives out good money” principle in effect in any Yahoo lobby. The overall level of discourse is, at best, sophomoric and, at worst, scurrilous and revolting. When we created Elite, it was for the explicit purpose of providing a place for Yahoo players to play their games in an atmosphere of civility and harmony. And we have succeeded at that.

We have succeeded because we have created a set of rules designed to closely regulate public behavior in Elite. It’s as simple as that. There may be members who consider these rules “fascist”, although we’d argue the point, but the solution in such cases is simple: there are literally dozens of leagues out there in which one may play. There is a league for every style of player. There are leagues for in-your-face aggressive players, there are leagues that seem to glory in rude, obnoxious language, there are leagues that totally tolerate rung-mongering and manipulation of ladders, and so forth.

But there’s only one Elite. And in Elite, we have channels for complaints. All complaints are listened to and acted upon, if directed through the proper channels. Improperly focussed negativism is deleted without a second thought. We WILL continue to keep our lobbies and our clubs as positively oriented as possible. We WILL continue to take member issues seriously if they are directed through the proper channels. We will NOT allow our forums to degenerate into pointless name-calling and blame-laying, no matter how often people try to cloak these communications under the banner of ‘free speech”.

We are here for you, the players. We do what we do so you may have a stress-free environment in which to play games online. We seek your active cooperation in helping us maintain that environment by directing all complaints and accusations through the proper channels.

Thanks for your help in this, and for being part of the best league on the net.
