Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a 40-something computer consultant who travels too much for work and not enough for fun. When I’m home I spend time with my guy, the Ref, who some of you have met. I’m a constant reader and I usually have the television on Turner Classic Movies watching something in black and white. Otherwise I’m playing Zelda games on Nintendo. Me and Popeye: I yam what I yam. I have a very dry sense of humor.
What do you like to do away from the computer?
I play Nintendo; (Game Cube is NOT a computer!); I read all the time, lately I’ve been re-reading the Left Behind series by LaHaye and Jenkins. I listen to jazz, gospel and old school R&B. When I can find it, I enjoy a good game of Bid Whist.
How did you learn about Eliters and when did you join?
When I moved to Minnesota I met a woman who worked at the hotel where I was staying. She told me to learn to play canasta so we could play online. I googled canasta looking for rules so I could learn to play. The first site that came up was Eliters. It was free and it had dominoes and cribbage also, so I joined. Never did get to be any good at Canasta…..
Have you gotten this woman to join Eliters? What kind of stories can she tell us about you?
She could tell you a couple of things about my first New Year's Eve in Minneapolis.
What is your preferred play site? And why?
Yahoo is my favorite site when i4s behaving. I like the big lobby chat window and the table options. If only we could do HTML in there!
How did you pick your Eliters' Name? Is this your one and only?
I had the name SingleSoul on AOL; when I tried to get a Yahoo name back in 1999, this is what Yahoo offered, so I took it. I’ve never changed it, so when I joined Eliters, it was the only name I thought of using.
What made you keep coming back to Eliters?
I got hooked on Eliters because I was living in a new city, sitting in a hotel room every evening. I didn’t know anybody in town, so it was nice to have folk to chat with online outside of a true “chat room” environment.
How long have you played games online?
I started playing online Thanksgiving Day of 1998. I was cooking dinner and had everything in the oven so I did an AOL keyword on Game to kill time. I found Slingo, then found cribbage and dominoes on Pogo. Nearly burned the gravy because the games were addictive.
What games do you play? And what is your favorite game and why?
I play Cribbage, Canasta, Dominoes, Gin and Backgammon. Crib is my favorite; the games are quick, there’s a good balance of skill and luck involved, and I actually manage to win sometimes!
Have you learned any new games since being a part of Eliters?
Yes, I learned to play Euchre – thanks to sfteachin who nagged me in Canasta until I let him teach me.
So what game did you offer to teach him in return?
I offered to teach him Crib; let’s just say that is still a work in progress…... :)
When did you become a TD, and what made you decide to do so?
Caro_sweet_eliter was one of the first people to greet me when I joined Canasta; she was the Training GL at that time. I was there all the time anyway, so when she suggested I consider hosting it seemed to make sense.
What positions have you held in Eliters and is there anything that you haven't done that you would like to do in the future?
I have been an AGL and a GL, I am currently a GL in Criby, and I'm the Newsletter Editor. Future? Who knows what opportunities and challenges may arise?
What happens when you win the "President for a Day" Contest? Describe what you think your day will be.
I’ll get up around midnight Eliters time, and sift through a lot of email – probably from Lisa and Wickd. Then I’ll go play Gin for a while and wind up in Canasta mid-morning. Oh – my status will say EDS and Emergency only. Then during lunch I’ll think up more wonderful innovations to incorporate for the Eliters site, and more ways to give away bonus yeps to the players. Yup, I think I’d have a day much like Balouza does…. LOL
Who is the one person that you can say has helped you the most here?
With no hesitation I have to say Tina, aka vt_spirit also known as Rudicifer. She is an incredible friend and we have worked together as GL and AGL in more than one league. She has helped me and I’d like to think I’ve helped her; she even does wake up calls when it’s time to host!! Additionally, she is my “venting” person. When there have been rough times, she has been the one who I could call and just rant until I felt better.
In your opinion, what makes Eliters different from other leagues?
Eliters is run like a business. It’s not one of those leagues where tourneys are made on an ad hoc basis; we have a schedule; we have multiple games; we have an organizational structure; we don’t have hidden policies.
What in your opinion is the best thing about Eliters?
The people and the application software; we have an application that is very user-friendly; it would be a shame for new players to give up on trying to join tourneys because the software was too difficult for them to maneuver. People come to play because they want to get into a game – not to learn to be programmers. I believe they can do that with our site.
You are stranded on a deserted island, no internet, no phone, no TV, walking along the beach, you come across...
A book that I haven't read; maybe by Clive Cussler or Jeffrey Deaver. I won't even miss the internet, the phone, the TV. I can just lounge on the sand and read!
But how can you host without Internet on your deserted island?
I’m a computer geek; I’ll work it out somehow!
If you had one wish what would it be?
Ahh… the classic Miss America question…. Peace on Earth.
If you had a second wish, what would it be?
To have internet on my deserted island so I could host!
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
I have a very special snack….. Chocolate frosting out of the can. Just a spoon, no cake, no brownies. Yummy!!
What TV show do you watch that you don't want anyone to know about?
Flavor of Love – it’s totally “whack”….
Who is cooking at Thanksgiving this year (in case you get wrapped up in a game again...)? Oh, and what time should we be there?
I’m cooking it all; and dinner is at 3… come on by – we’re blessed to have plenty to share!!
If you could only use one sentence to describe the way you feel about Eliters, to a prospective new player, what would it be?
Eliters is like being able to take family with me when I travel; it doesn’t get any better than that!
What is the most memorable experience that you have had as a TD or a player, online or at a live event.
I participated in the 2004 Grand Prix in Chicago. Got to meet Stevie – wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee …and I met Millerman….. he kept sneaking up behind me and startling me. Also sitting at the bar hosting tournaments; that was kind of different. ….. met a lot of Eliters, but I can’t say too much about it because the rule is “what happens in Chicago, STAYS in Chicago”. (LOL) All I can say is “gett’er done!”
What is the funniest thing that has happened to you since joining Eliters?
Being witness to a TD in hotel bathrobe and tennis shoes walking through the Chicago hotel lobby asking for a Pepsi. I’m still laughing 2 years later.
The most embarrassing thing, that you can talk about of course.
Trying to send an IM and accidentally pasting the IM into a game lobby.
If you could be one person for a day, who would you be and why?
I want to be Gumshoe Steve. Then I can note rg101 for calling me old, purcelin and tina for calling me yippee, and perfect29_1 for beating me too much.
How do you pass the time on your drive to and from work?
Since my drive to work occurs in different cities, I’m noticing new places along the way and planning some siteseeing. Last week I noticed the Field Museum in Chicago, so I know I want to see the King Tut exhibit.
What’s in your CD player right now?
Joe Cocker’s Greatest Hits, Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack and The Gospel soundtrack. (My taste in music is all over the board.)
When I grow up I want to be just like:
My mother. She was a true lady who was a friend to everyone; I never heard raise her voice, nor have I ever heard anyone say anything negative about her.
Any last words for our readers?
I enjoy Eliters; I enjoy life away from Eliters; I enjoy people. I enjoy Eliters people. So, come, let me enjoy you! Come play Criby so I can meet you!!!
