An Owl named Merlin

For those of you who know rick_usmc_ret, you know his great passions in life - the U.S. Marine Corps, his family, his trucks, hunting, and mud.  Not necessarily in that order.  (see interview).

Sometimes life takes a strange turn.  A few weeks ago Rick was in the woods doing what hunters do and a barred owl came to him.  The owl had been injured and was obviously having difficulty.  Rick took the owl home with him to his wife Sue, who is a nurse.

Somehow Merlin (as they named him) knew that they were helping him and allowed Sue to nurse him back to health.  Now this is where it gets strange... Merlin refused to leave.  Every time they tried to release him back into the wild, he would fly back and sit on Rick's head, arm, shoulder whatever was available (these guys have talons so this takes some doing).  Rick even contacted the wild life ranger for advice and was told they had none, this was such an unusual case.

Eventually, Rick's son managed to release Merlin back into the wild - only by having Rick hide in the truck because as long as he could see Rick he would fly back to him.  This was one of the hardest things this tough old marine ever had to do.

Long live Merlin!
