As I write this on a beautiful July day heading into the 4th July weekend in the U.S. - I am reminded of just how much we have to be grateful for.
I was born in a country where your entire life was determined by the colour of your skin; where freedom of speech was an empty phrase, and between censorship and governmental control by nefarious means - there was little criticism and very little questioning of authority - unless you were prepared to pay a terrible price for it.
Today I live in the United States of America - with all its warts and problems. But I have absolute freedom to criticize it, to joke about politicians, to make whatever choices I want and know that its all good.
I am proud to be an American. I am also proud that South Africa has moved away from its terrible past thanks to the wisdom and heart of a man who spent 26 years in jail, and yet had the foresight to realize that the long road to freedom was still open.
I am grateful for my life, for my heath, for my friends, my family - real life and Eliters.
